Global flooding is increasing with alarming frequency and intensity, resulting in serious impacts on the environment, society and the economy. One of the main causes of global flooding is climate change. Global warming causes melting of polar ice caps and rising sea levels, which contribute to flooding in coastal areas. Additionally, extreme rainfall is also increasing; with erratic weather patterns, areas that were previously not prone to flooding are now vulnerable. Uncontrolled deforestation exacerbates this problem. Forests function as natural water reservoirs, and when these areas are damaged, the soil’s ability to absorb water is drastically reduced, triggering flooding. Rapid urbanization also has a major impact. Development that does not consider environmental aspects often results in water channels being disrupted, preventing water from flowing effectively and increasing the risk of flooding in urban areas. The impact of global flooding can be devastating. Economic losses due to flooding reach trillions of dollars every year. Critical infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and buildings can suffer major damage, requiring enormous costs to repair. The agricultural sector has also been hit, with crops damaged and fertile land submerged in water, affecting global food security. In addition, floods often cause the population to be scattered. When homes are flooded, many people are forced to flee, creating social problems such as an increase in the number of refugees and pressure on resources in safe areas. Public health is also threatened; floods increase the risk of water-related diseases, such as cholera and respiratory infections, due to stagnant waste. The most vulnerable people, including those in developing countries, are often the main victims. They have minimal access to resources to build resilience to disasters and often do not have early warning systems. Therefore, flood mitigation efforts must be prioritized in development planning. Increased awareness and global collaboration are critical to meeting these challenges. Measures such as ecosystem restoration, sustainable management of water resources, and development of green infrastructure can help reduce the impact of flooding. Involving local communities in disaster planning and management is also key to creating an effective approach. Technological innovations, such as the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and advanced weather monitoring, can help in predicting floods and optimizing emergency responses. Education and training for the community regarding disaster preparedness is also needed to reduce the impact of flooding.
