Most Americans are familiar with the big national news brands like NBC News, Fox News and CNN. But these outlets aren’t just on your TV – they’re also in your social feeds and on Hulu. And some are figuring out that online is their strength, too.
The New York Times and Yahoo News are among the most popular news sources online. And The Hill is required reading for people who live and breathe politics, whether you’re a legislator, staffer, lobbyist or policy expert.
In the early days of television, networks would often feature a “news block” on their weekday morning shows that included a national story and a local story. This approach was particularly common in smaller markets where it was expensive to buy advertising space for a full newscast. The national stories were often sensationalized in order to attract viewers. Some stations also saved some of their most controversial investigative stories for their weekly sweeps.
The Associated Press isn’t just about reporting the news, it’s about building the whole system that lets other news outlets report the news too. AP pumps out text, video and photos to thousands of media companies as well as governments, schools and finance platforms.
This year, the same five outlets ranked as the most trusted news sources, with the BBC leading and PBS trailing. The New York Times and NBC are the most trusted print news sources, while CBS and Fox News are the most trusted cable news channels. Overall, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to trust specific news outlets.
